CeBIT 2017: Software AG and FabSpace 2.0 launch a start-up competition focusing on big data from space

Darmstadt, Germany, Tuesday, March 21, 2017

With the right approach, big data from space can be used to make the world better. Together with the earth observation lab FabSpace 2.0, Darmstadt, which is jointly managed by the Institute of Geodesy of the Darmstadt University of Technology and the Darmstadt-based Centre of Satellite Navigation Hesse (cesah GmbH) in close proximity to the European Space Operations Center (ESOC), Software AG is organizing a competition for start-ups which use satellite-based data and innovative business ideas to achieve a socio-economic impact.

German ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter spent six months aboard Russia’s MIR space station and another six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and gained a very unique view of our wonderful blue planet Earth. Today, he spoke about his experiences on Software AG’s CeBIT stage. In his presentation, he also addressed the role of aerospace as an innovation driver for economy, science and society.

In the framework of a fascinating panel discussion entitled “Space 4.0 – From Space to Business”, a start-up competition was then launched for young companies that want to do business using satellite-based data. This data is captured by the Darmstadt-based European Space Agency (ESA) via the European COPERNICUS program and made available free of charge.

The aerospace industry is a real IoT use case and forms the foundation for digital innovations of tomorrow. Satellite data is already a key enabler in implementing innovative business ideas. FabSpace 2.0, financed by the European Commission in six European countries as a “Horizon 2020 Project”, offers access to the satellite data and earth observation tools to interested parties free of charge.

The start-up competition will focus on the many potential applications for Earth observation data. The number of spaces available is limited; online registration is now open for those interested in participating. For further information, see:
